Information on Urban Sustainability by Topic

Urban Design, Landscape, & Form
Urban design, landscape and form includes concepts such as land use and spatial planning, urban structure, and related urban strategies. It involves the physical and spatial nature of a city or settlement. It fundamentally influences urban outcomes across all dimensions of sustainability.
Sustainable Building
Sustainable building includes sustainable construction, life cycle analysis of materials and methods, architecture (including historical and cultural heritage/buildings), and physical infrastructure provision and engineering. It can be described as construction that meets current building needs, minimises adverse effects on occupants and the environment, and reduces impacts on future generations.
Social Aspects
The social aspects include social infrastructure, e.g. the facilities, services and networks that support the cultural, recreational and other needs of communities. It also includes cohesion and community-based solutions, Treaty of Waitangi issues, ethnicity, culture, inter-generational equity and education. It encompasses the interactive mechanisms between and within places and people. Community participation and empowerment of local people are intrinsic elements of it, as is an understanding of the wider interests of the community based on its ethnic and demographic mix.
Environmental Quality
Environmental quality is determined by the management of natural and physical resources. It includes concepts such as environmental effects, pollution, ecological footprint, biodiversity, and amenity.
Resource Conservation
Resource conservation incorporates the principles of resource efficiency (especially water and energy), waste management, use of renewable resources, and Kaitiakitanga.
Urban Economics
Urban economics is about the cost and benefit analysis of alternative approaches to urban development. It includes concepts such as sustainable business and triple bottom line reporting, regional development, and business opportunities for a sustainable economy.
Transport
The topic of transport includes choice of transport mode (especially cycling, walking and the use of public transport), infrastructure, access to transport, fuel choice, and the costs and benefits in relation to these. It is integral to all aspects of urban management, especially in relation to its role in social and economic development.
Risk Management
Risk management includes elements of health and safety, hazards and contaminated sites, disaster planning, urban change, and community vulnerability. It is one way of achieving the ‘best practicable option’ for advancing sustainability in an urban setting.
Governance
Governance is a term which encompasses partnerships, leadership, Agenda 21 and local government, public participation in, and integration of decision-making processes. It is essentially a political process that determines the outcome of urban decision-making.
Measuring Progress
Measuring progress refers to the use of indicators, environmental assessment methods, state of the environment reporting, maps and spatial information. It involves evaluating and monitoring progress towards urban sustainability.
Composite Information
Composite information is information that spans more than one, or all of the previous dimensions, e.g., integrated texts, websites, magazines, conference proceedings, or bibliographies.
