Traditional Ways of Life IconTraditional Ways of Life

Mount Victoria, Tangi-te-keo

Was named after the soul of the taniwha Whataitai, which flew to the top of the mount in the form of a bird and proceeded to tangi (weep and mourn). Many of the tangata whenua sites can be seen from here.

Te Aro Park (Pigeon Park) [I7]

This area was formerly Te Aro Kāinga (village), first established by the Ngāti Mutanga tribe of Taranaki in 1824. It was later jointly occupied by Ngāti Ruanui and Ngāti Haumia. A stream and marshy area close by was an important food source but the 1855 earthquake uplifted the area and led to the draining of the marsh which resulted in the loss of this major food source. The village dwindled and in 1870 most of the land was sold to extend Taranaki Street.

Te Marae O Te Papa Tongarewa [J7]

A living, contemporary, marae operating within Te Papa. Here you can share in ceremonies and experience the vibrancy and warmth of the Māori culture.
